John D. Alexander
John Alexander has been a member of the Georgia Bar since 2001 and has practiced law for over 20 years. He maintains two primary and complementary areas of practice: estate planning and civil litigation. In his estate planning practice, John advises individuals and families on wills, trusts, health care directives, guardianships, and powers of attorney, with an emphasis on creating practical plans designed to function effectively under Georgia law. In his civil litigation practice, he represents clients in trial and appellate courts throughout the State of Georgia, with a focus on surety and construction matters.
His experience in surety and construction litigation directly informs his estate planning practice. Having seen how disputes arise in court when planning documents are unclear or incomplete, he uses that experience to design estate plans that are practical, clear, and intended to reduce confusion, delay, and avoidable conflict whenever possible.
John has significant experience representing sureties, insurers, and contractors in complex construction and bond-related disputes. His surety practice includes performance and payment bond claims, indemnity actions, construction contract disputes, and litigation involving public and private projects. This work has involved matters related to project delay, defective performance, scope disputes, and enforcement of contractual obligations under Georgia law.
Through this litigation practice, John has developed a deep understanding of risk allocation in both commercial and construction settings, including how contractual relationships between owners, contractors, subcontractors, and sureties operate in practice as well as in dispute. That same understanding informs his estate planning work, particularly in anticipating how unclear documents or poorly structured plans can lead to avoidable conflict, uncertainty, and litigation in probate and family matters.In addition to his legal practice, John serves his state and nation through the Georgia State Defense Force as an Assistant Judge Advocate, is an active member of his church where he previously served on the Finance Council, and is a member of the Northeast Georgia Estate Planning Council.
John earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a focus in Risk Management and Insurance from Georgia State University. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Mercer University with a concentration in Accounting and received his Juris Doctor from Texas A&M School of Law.
John began his legal career in 2001 with Thompson & Slagle LLC, a boutique surety law firm where he practiced for over two decades representing sureties and insurers in complex litigation and claims resolution, while also developing experience in estate planning matters including wills, trusts, and related planning documents. In 2022, John and Kelley Herrin formed Herrin & Alexander, LLC to continue providing clients with experienced counsel in both estate planning and civil litigation, with a focus on practical solutions, clear guidance, and long-term planning for individuals, families, and businesses.
